Semi air brakes adjustment

All air brakes need adjustment. They function exactly opposite from the hydraulic brakes. The moment you push the brake pedal the air is taken away causing the brakes to close down on the drum.

So, you have to wait for the air to build pressure.

Follow these steps:

  1. Identify the slack adjuster just behind the driver’s side tire. It has a shaft with a cam attached to it.
  2. With a closed wrench tighten the bolt on the slack adjuster all the way down.
  3. After feeling resistance on the drum loosen the adjuster have a turn. Between the brake pad and brake drum should be a distance of 1/8 of an inch.
  4. Do the same for the remaining wheels and also check the thickness of the brake pads.
