Definition of a foundation break
The foundation brake embraces many small parts inside the brake system of a truck.
At the end of each axle there is a foundation brake. The parts that compose it are the spring actuator, the mechanical brake mechanism including the friction material and brake shoes and the brake drum.
Usually large trucks with air brakes have foundation brakes and the most known is the “S” cam drum brake.
To maintain the safety of the driver and the integrity of the vehicle it is important to perform brake maintenance. Because without the foundation brakes no brake will function, it is the driver who has to decide when to take the vehicle to a professional checking of the brakes.
